A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy demands the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally up to the player to blend into the strategic frameworks and player rankings required with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.
The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about channeling it appropriately. Personal talent matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when fame takes over. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of last month’s squad. He watched the national side secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the squad's spirit and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in champion style, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has shown him that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the youngster after demonstrating that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” the German said. “Bellingham possesses the edge. You need a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he has. We all need to help him and establish a setting which he can use his drive against rivals and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”
Bellingham took up most of the attention at the team news conference for this month’s final group games against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, what about another talent? Here is a further gifted playmaker in need of love and guidance. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights this year but Tuchel had to consider the player after his performance in the Champions League match against the German side this week.
The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the various creators at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s game as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager making the same mistake if it disrupts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles helps. He is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea about him for years. I think it matches his abilities the most.”
He conceded there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the environment, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a certain structure, to have a clear task. I think he profits greatly from clarity. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel mentioned one star bursting through for easy finishes and Foden netting goals from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Interest is high.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter assisting the captain to net in a friendly win versus the Scots in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo combined for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of the player having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager desires Bellingham onside but he will be observing him closely. Leave the ego outside. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an even better one.
