The retail giant Enforces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during a single visit. This new rule officially takes effect as of early November, based on a company memo distributed to employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video faced widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to go through.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. Yet, the wording has raised questions due to its vagueness. What exactly counts as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Moreover, because the restriction is tied to individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to accumulate significant stocks throughout the day.

The Scalping Phenomenon

For the average collector, this approach might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the game's rising popularity.

Certain buyers aim to resell sealed items for a profit, whereas some hunt for valuable pulls that can fetch sky-high values. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed for over $800 on various platforms.

Looking Ahead

The new rule aligns with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the persistent interest and potential reseller attention.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
