The ex-president of France will soon publish a book in the coming weeks titled Notes from a Cell, chronicling his experience served behind bars.
The revelation emerged less than two weeks following Sarkozy gained freedom while he contests the guilty verdict related to unlawful coordination in a case to acquire election campaign funds from the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi.
“Inside jail visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he notes in an extract, implying the memoir is more about his reflections during seclusion instead of wider commentary regarding the packed and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.
“Silence escapes me, not present in La Santé, where noise is constant sound,” he continues. “The din unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is strengthened behind bars.”
During his plea for freedom, the former leader had appeared via screen from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this ordeal tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”
“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”
He, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, was the first ex-leader from the EU and the first postwar leader of France to experience jail.
Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.
It remains unclear whether he had time to go through the texts he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, where an innocent man is imprisoned but escapes to take revenge.
The former leader was placed secluded for his own security in a space roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail located in the capital. Two bodyguards stayed in a neighbouring cell.
Reports indicated his diet consisted just yogurt in prison worried that meals provided may have been contaminated. Options were available to cook for himself but refused this, based on unnamed sources. Not known is if he will detail his dietary choices.
His attorney, Christophe Ingrain each day during the incarceration, told the release hearing security would be better released rather than in custody. “He has faced death threats, listened to yells after dark and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”
His incarceration began on 21 October following the judiciary gave him five years in prison on conspiracy charges related to a plan to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.
He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, and another court case planned for next spring.
