Excitement is building for the horror series Welcome to Derry, that's been receiving positive feedback and weaving in references from the broader King universe. Just one day after launch, the network announced that episode two will arrive early, scheduled ideally for the spookiest night.
Beginning on October 31 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, the second episode of It: Welcome to Derry will launch on the streaming service, before its linear broadcast. The remaining installments of the show's first season will premiere on Sundays on both HBO and its streaming arm, culminating in the concluding chapter on December 14th.
Set in the Derry mythology, Welcome to Derry borrows elements from the classic book while building upon the setting established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the recent movie adaptations. The first It movie centered on kids and teens battling unimaginable horrors, so it’s fitting that the prequel upholds that legacy. Yet, the premiere episode of HBO’s Welcome to Derry proves it set out to escalate the fear, offering more frightening moments than the movies and establishing a dark atmosphere for what's to come.
Set in 1962, the series presents a different group of grown-ups and kids residing in a apparently peaceful community masking a sinister core. The town follows a vicious, repeating pattern—characterized by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a terrifying being returns every 27 years. While It: Welcome to Derry might appear like it leans too heavily to the cinematic adaptations initially, what differentiates the streaming show is its two-sided viewpoint—told from the viewpoints of young and old simultaneously. Younger characters stay particularly vulnerable to It's terror, but grown-ups aren’t spared dealing with their individual fears born from local discrimination and lurking supernatural forces.
It: Welcome to Derry premieres on Halloween at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
