The gravest potential impacts of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by researchers, including a scorching 4C increase in mean temperatures to a two-metre surge in sea levels. A separate possibility predicts a decline of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and power requirements.
These consequences, some of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as improbable but credible. The scientists explained that these projections filled a gap in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for worst-case results.
"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," commented the lead researcher who oversaw the analysis. "Britain has been making preparations in the absence of the frameworks to plan for catastrophic outcomes. We've now given policymakers what they need to get ready for future conditions they pray never occur, but must not overlook."
Another collection of dire projections details the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These show that temperatures could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C higher than average, while precipitation could be three times normal levels.
The probability of the extreme scenarios happening cannot be precisely determined due to unknown factors about what steps will be taken to combat climate change and how the planet's climate will behave. This analysis was described as similar to security threat evaluations or scenario planning for financial systems.
These dire projections could be applied to guide the building of major projects, such as housing developments, nuclear power stations and urban drainage systems. Awareness of these climate risks could also accelerate the push to slash carbon pollution.
The analysis developed the worst-case scenarios using a combination of observed and historical experience, digital projections and established principles. These outcomes exclude potential global problems like the agricultural collapse and resource wars.
The research was requested as part of a official risk assessment framework. Earlier reports have warned that not enough attention was being paid to catastrophic yet improbable risks.
An independent advisory body has stated that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the risks for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been criticised as being "inadequate" by certain experts.
An official statement said: "The climate emergency is at the center of the country's focus, both adapting for the future and becoming a clean energy superpower. It is essential that the UK is resilient for the impacts."
