In spite of Runaway Success, Clair Obscur Creators Plan to Maintain Team Compact

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only a top GOTY contender, but also an enormous sales triumph. Developer Sandfall Interactive along with publisher Kepler Interactive revealed that this title topped five million copies in sales, and that’s despite its status as a launch-day addition on Xbox Game Pass.

Its success came as a shock to Sandfall. I was convinced that we'd create a solid title garnering moderate sales results,” a senior team member commented.

Another leading developer pointed out this title's Metacritic rating, now standing at 93, was the most surprising moment to the team versus “our initial expectations and the final result of the field was. Once it was published everybody in the studio was screaming and jumping. The energy was electric.”

That success prompted Sandfall developing a complimentary expansion for players featuring fresh areas, enemies, plus epic encounters, which they said is coming sometime soon.

However, despite the game's evolution, don’t expect the studio to grow. “We have an excellent group guided by a visionary director with a clear direction for the project and also for new ideas. We'd like to keep the human scale that led to our success then develop one big game after another,” they said.

The size of Sandfall drummed up plenty of debate upon the title's release. Some developers, including renowned designers, viewed this studio as a perfect example for game development. Although the team is and was indeed a small team versus large developers, one glance at the game's credits indicates dozens of people were involved; the French studio partnered with overseas animators to work on gameplay animations, to illustrate.

“We plan to recruit a bit more definitely should there be a future production surge in the coming years,” they said. “However, I envision rather a creative atelier with a small number of highly skilled individuals that create collective masterpieces.” He noted that the studio's philosophy as a company “is more to maintain the key advantages that enabled this success in the first place.”

Despite being premature for the studio to say specifically about future projects — and trust me, I attempted to learn more — they are certain their essential identity. “The turn-based aspect, I think it's in the DNA of this project,” they remarked. “It's still premature to be able to tell what will interest us, however, it's crucial to stay true to the DNA of studio featuring rich storytelling and the interesting gameplay that inspires the team.”

The lead programmer mentioned how this game began with their director pursuing his ideal project. And hopefully that philosophy will be repeated with upcoming games.”
