Hardline Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile Incoming President.
After a definitive second-round vote, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Win
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Centered On Security and Migration
Known for his unwavering Catholic views and praise for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily built on promises to tackle rising insecurity and significantly curb migration.
He consistently blamed immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the election cycle, he delivered an final demand for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His proposals included U.S.-style measures such as building holding facilities, border walls, security fences, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Within a Regional Shift
Many analysts view Kast's success as part of a larger conservative wave in the region, coming after recent political outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits further view it as a continuation of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Solid Majority
In spite of his clear popular vote win, Kast is not expected to hold an clear majority in parliament, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when all rightwing parties are combined together.
This legislative reality might complicate his agenda, such as a vow to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not detailed concrete steps.
"There are several aspects about what a Kast presidency will operate that we don't know because he has not explained the way he will implement them," commented a political analyst.
The analyst added, "On the economy, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures associated with the right-wing. But where there is much less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his central theme across the campaign."
