The former official declared he would step back from public duties after Congressional panel disclosed his frequent correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

The economist commented in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and look forward observing their progress".

Summers, who once headed Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public emails demonstrated that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted Summers' choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the company commented.

Political Context

This development arrives after the entire Congress of Congress agreed on Tuesday to pass a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its records on the case.

The bill will afterward head to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he plans to sign the bill, after reversing his view on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The emails revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to link Summers to prominent world leaders.

After the correspondence were shared with the general audience, the former official said he accepted "full responsibility for my poor decision to persist in interacting with the financier".

He further stated that he hoped "to reestablish trust and fix bonds with the persons most important to me".

Previous Positions

Summers occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He presided over the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following his announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that he was ceased to be connected with the organization.

Summers entered the directorate of the technology firm, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its top executive the company leader.
