Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations
Just last month, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, describing him as a āsnake and a liarā and alleging of having āa career of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā Yet, in a recent statement, Adams changed his position, announcing he now intends to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.
āI think that it is imperative to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this election is,ā Adams stated.
He added, āResidents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and Iām going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and groups and Iām going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.ā
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest worldwide and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
During a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adamsās endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams responded to journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, āI'm meeting Andrew this evening.ā
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
