A Chinese judicial body has handed down death sentences to a group of prominent members of a well-known Burmese mafia to execution as Beijing persists in its crackdown on fraudulent networks in Southeast Asian region.
Overall, 21 Bai family figures and partners were found guilty of scams, homicide, injury and various crimes, reported a official document released on the judicial website.
The family is among a few of mafias that gained influence in the early 2000s and changed the impoverished remote area of Laukkaing into a lucrative base of gambling establishments and nightlife areas.
Recently they turned to fraudulent schemes in which many of illegally moved workers, many of them Chinese, are ensnared, harmed and compelled to cheat victims in unlawful operations estimated at huge sums.
Syndicate leader Bai Suocheng and his heir the younger Bai were included in the group of men condemned to execution by the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court. Another individual, Hu Xiaojiang and Chen Guangyi were the other three punished.
A couple of individuals of the clan syndicate were handed suspended death sentences. Five were condemned to life imprisonment, while additional individuals were given jail sentences ranging from several years to two decades.
This family, who controlled their own armed group, established 41 facilities to house their cyberscam operations and casinos, officials said.
These illegal activities included over 29 billion Chinese yuan ($4.1 billion; £3.1bn). These activities also resulted in the deaths of several Chinese individuals, the suicide of an individual and several injuries, state media reported.
The strict punishments delivered by the court are part of China's campaign to remove the extensive scam rings in Southeast Asia - and send a stern warning to further criminal syndicates.
These clans became dominant in the recent decades with the help of Min Aung Hlaing - who is in charge of the country's regime. He had aimed to support partners in Laukkaing after removing its previous ruler.
Among the groups, the Bais were "absolutely number one", Bai Yingcang previously stated to state media.
During that period, the clan was the dominant in both the political and armed circles," the individual said in a report about the clan, shown on national media in July.
Within that film, a individual at a their scam centres recalled the mistreatment he had suffered there: in addition to being assaulted, he had his fingernails removed with pliers and a couple of his fingers severed with a tool.
Bai Yingcang is among those who were condemned to death this week. The individual has also been separately convicted of organizing to trade and produce a large quantity of narcotics, official sources stated.
Their downfall came in recent times as circumstances altered.
Previously Beijing has pressed the Myanmar junta to limit fraudulent schemes in the area.
In 2023, the Chinese police released arrest warrants for the most prominent figures of such groups.
Bai Suocheng, the Bai family's patriarch, was among the warlords who were transferred to China from Myanmar in recent months.
For what reason is the authorities putting significant resources to pursue the four families?" a Chinese investigator commented in the July documentary.
This serves as a warning individuals, regardless of who you are, your base, if you commit these heinous acts against the nationals, you will be held accountable."
