Joseph Parker tested positive during a doping test carried out on the day he fought in 11th-round defeat against UK boxer Fabio Wardley.
Wardley along with Parker engaged in an intense bout held in London in late October to decide who would become mandatory WBO contender to reigning heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk.
Parker had positioned himself as the primary candidate to face the champion after putting together a remarkable six wins in a row, however put his contender position at stake during the bout and suffered an 11th-round stoppage.
A standard screening given to the boxer through the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency the day of the match returned positive which leaves the veteran boxer facing a challenge to clear his name.
Parker's promotional company released a statement declaring: "Vada notified everyone involved about Parker had a positive result subsequent to an anti-doping test carried out on the fight day. While the matter is investigated, no further statements are forthcoming currently."
Parker was crowned world champion six years ago before he lost the WBO title via unanimous decision to British star Joshua in Cardiff in 2018.
Parker remained an active participant on British soil from that point, competing in eight bouts altogether on UK territory and transferring to Dublin for training camps alongside respected coach Andy Lee during this period.
Coached by Andy Lee, the boxer bounced back from his 2022 loss versus Joe Joyce to achieve multiple wins which put him at the front of the line to meet the champion until he was defeated to the British fighter.
Subsequent to the boxer produced an adverse finding during the Wardley bout, reportedly for cocaine, a probe into the findings is underway.
