In a strong statement, Big 12 Conference commissioner stated that Notre Dame's athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “completely out of bounds” for his remarks about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Notre Dame maintains a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a participating member in other sports. Bevacqua has claimed that the ACC hurt Notre Dame’s bid to qualify for the College Football Playoff, instead pushing for the inclusion of the University of Miami.
“The ACC do great things for Notre Dame, but we offer substantial football value to the ACC, and we couldn't comprehend why you would go out of your way to try to damage us in this process,” the athletic director remarked.
Miami ultimately received the CFP spot over Notre Dame, mostly due to winning the direct meeting between the two schools. Notre Dame's AD additionally stated that the ACC ran a coordinated social media effort over several weeks indicating its support for Miami.
Later on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner addressed the allegations at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
“In my view his actions has been out of line,” Yormark stated. “He is totally out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”
The response is particularly significant given Bevacqua’s prominent position. He serves on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, representing the interests of independent Notre Dame.
Yormark further highlighted the lifeline the ACC provided Notre Dame in the Covid-affected 2020 season, providing the Irish a complete conference schedule and a berth in its title game.
“It has been egregious,” he said again. “It’s been egregious attacking Jim Phillips, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”
Speculation had circulated about Notre Dame potentially leaving the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. However, the commissioner's strong reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a scenario less likely in the near term.
Notre Dame, who made the CFP championship game last season, have announced they will decline a bowl game after missing out this year.
