Even absolute newcomers will soon be scaling protected regional outcrops on this weekend session. Attendees will become proficient in tying in, safety techniques and multiple methods of ascent, plus rappelling. Capped at six participants to a single guide, there is significant individual attention and tailored objectives. This program is open to anyone aged 13 and over, ranging from first-time climbers to those with limited indoor experience. This is a day-only option, but there is a list of suggested, reasonably-priced lodging close by, such as campgrounds, hostels, bed and breakfasts and inns. The base is a short stroll from the local train station, situated on the rail route from Manchester to Sheffield.

This historic hillside village, a picturesque white village in Andalucía, about 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the breathtaking backdrop for this creative getaway. Painters of all abilities – including novices – will be taught how to plan and create abstract artworks. Part of the schedule will be spent outdoors, working on tutorials out in nature. These initial sketches and paintings will then be worked on in the studio, with guests completing multiple interpretive scenes in acrylics to be shown in the local community. The group has exclusive access of the hotel, which is set around an central patio and has a roof terrace with panoramic vistas over the countryside. The cost encompasses five days of painting tuition; full board; and an outing to the local castle and other points of interest.

This sun-drenched cooking retreat, set on a villa by the river in the inland Portuguese region, is inspired by the plant-based cuisine of celebrated cooks. Participants will learn to produce selection of small dishes, attend a hands-on falafel session, perfect mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains like a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. The schedule includes visits to the village market and a nearby winery to sample Portuguese wines, plus free time for walks by the Funcho River, to unwind on the terrace or swim in the infinity pool. The accommodation, a renovated rural property, has multiple rooms, as well as glamping tents in the grounds.

This energetic camp is an energizing, inclusive weekend adults’ street dance camp in High Wycombe. The format each day is a party-style group warmup, then three hour-and-a-half classes covering different street dance styles, then an hour-long jam to demonstrate new moves. Participants are split into groups based on ability and experience, so it is perfect for those who are brand new to street dance, all the way to advanced dancers or teachers. The camp does not provide accommodation but there are a number of hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is under an hour by rail into London.

St Ives is the perfect setting for a sea shanty weekend. Participants will learn historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at writing their own. The schedule includes voice exercises, breathing exercises, performance tips and a final evening concert. The holiday is held in a country house with views of the bay. All meals are provided, such as a Cornish cream tea on arrival, cooked or continental breakfasts, lunches to go and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, alas, is not included. Author and lecturer Greg Mosse runs the daily workshops on this writing retreat. He covers everything from plot, characters, setting and tension, to sending manuscripts to agents. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in events at the beginning and end of the week. The holiday is based at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – ten private accommodations are set around a garden and pool (companions are welcome to come along). On the last night, aspiring writers celebrate with a musical performance in the courtyard and a final meal.

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of programs on sustainability: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This weekend course will help participants get to grips with the basics of beekeeping, study the life cycle of bees and learn about their environmental benefits. It is aimed at produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. This course is also a opportunity to de-stress in the centre's sustainably managed forests, which are habitat for wildlife, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and uncommon bird species. Accommodation the night before is 80 pounds, and all meals and lodging for the weekend is £97.

These new summer sailing weekends are spent on Wayfarers and Dufours on the Blackwater estuary. They are designed for novice sailors starting out or those with some knowledge who want a skills update. Participants can improve their helming, build their nautical skills and work towards the recognized levels one to three in a supportive atmosphere. There are non-residential and residential options, staying in simple dorms in the waterfront training centre. The non-residential package includes packed lunches, while the overnight option includes two nights' stay and full board, from hearty breakfasts to BBQ dinners.
